Avizo Inspect

3D software for digital industrial inspection

Computed Tomography is increasingly used in industry as a method for nondestructive testing, adding to standard CMM the ability to make digital measures and detect and quantify defects inside a part. Based on FEI’s flagship Avizo software application and integrating expertise acquired over more than 10 years, Avizo Inspect 3D software allows to visualize, analyze, measure and inspect industrial objects acquired by CT systems or 3D microscopy.

Avizo Inspect provides a comprehensive set of tools addressing the whole research-to-production cycle: from materials research in off-line labs to automated quality control in production environments. With Avizo Inspect, reduce your design cycle, inspection times, and meet higher-level quality standards at a lower cost.

Avizo Inspect

Avizo Inspect streamlines the process of industrial inspection and materials design-off-line, near-line, and in-line.

  • Dimensional metrology with advanced measurement
  • Extensive set of inspection workflows (recipes) for detection and quantification (indications, porosity, inclusions, defects, fiber characterization)
  • Easy creation and customization of inspection recipes
  • Reporting and traceability
  • Actual/nominal comparison by integrating CAD models
  • Reverse engineering workflow for additive manufacturing
  • Automation and full in-line integration

Dimensional metrology

Great advances in the resolution of computed tomography acquisition systems together with state-of-the-art analysis software have now reached a level of precision to be suitable for dimensional metrology in industrial inspection.

Avizo Inspect 3D software for digital industrial inspection provides advanced dimensional metrology tools for defining a test plan on a reference part. Such test plans can be replayed automatically on any part corresponding to the reference. Automatic Accept or Reject decisions can be made by evaluating the results of the test plan processing. A set of nominal values including tolerancing information can be defined on a reference part in order to inspect all parts and check for compliance.

Easy creation & customization of inspection workflows

While digital industrial inspection aims at improving production quality, the inspection process should also be able to provide cost reductions and support increased productivity. The ultimate goal is to fully automate complex inspection scenarios.

The new Avizo Inspect 3D software for digital industrial inspection provides an advanced recipe mechanism that allows defect detection and part characterization to be automated. For a particular inspection workflow, the recipe is created just once and can then be replayed at any time.

The recipe includes advanced analysis processes that give meaningful insight about defects that are detected during the inspection. The automatically generated quantifiable measurements allow a proper assessment of the part quality.

Automation and full in-line integration

Complex inspection scenarios, combining multiple recipes on different sub-regions of the part or material, can be created using Avizo Inspect Designer. Scenarios can combine multiple steps of visual inspection and automatic or manual measurements. Inspector services run scenarios created with Avizo Inspect Designer and will accept or reject a part according to automated or interactive acceptance and/or tolerance values associated with automatic and/or manual measurements.

Avizo Inspect In-line directly connects Inspector services with the acquisition system, streamlining the inspection process. Avizo Inspect Service, included with In-line, pre-processes data pushed to a DICOM/DICONDE server; performs pre-processing, such as multi-part splitting, part registration to reference model, and acquisition artifact reduction; then dispatches the pre-processed part to a scalable collection of Inspector services. At any time, the results of inspection scenarios can be accessed with Reviewer services, where each step of the scenario can be reviewed and a final decision on part acceptance made. Avizo In-line also includes user administration, allowing assignment and management of different permission levels.

Product quality and safety

Providing safe, high-quality food is a mandatory requirement that protects consumers from illness and injury. The combination of micro-CT images and Avizo allows for analysis and control of biological, chemical, and physical elements of the finished food product.

For example, during the analysis of a random chocolate candy, the end of the production chain is tasked with checking both the food quality (in terms of quantity of ingredients) and the food safety (presence of undesired materials). The composition of the candy (volume amount of each ingredient) is precisely measured, as well as the porosity.

Bubbles analysis

Bubbles in food create an aerated structure that enhances the product appearance and its properties (smoothness, creaminess, crispness, etc.). Avizo provides efficient methods of segmenting the bubbles and quantifying both their attributes and size distribution. Avizo’s Pore Network Modeling allows the creation of an equivalent network model of the porous distribution for advanced analysis of the bubbles’ interconnections and properties.

Powder flowability

Physical properties, such as particle size and spatial distribution, shape factors, packing density, and surface area, play a key role in powders flow. Powder flowability can be fully characterized with Avizo’s advanced and extensive quantification and analysis toolset.

For example, agglomerates in baby powder milk can be segmented and classified based on size and spatial distribution, to quantify their effect on powder flowability.

Seed analysis

3D structural analysis of seeds is critical in many aspects of seed technology. Avizo’s advanced characterization toolset allows for quality control of coated seeds. Seed coat thickness, volume, sphericity, and roughness can be evaluated. Measurements of internal and external seed structures, including volume and surface areas, allow for the quantification of seed properties such as resistance and germination potential.
